A new signal box has been built at the Thames Valley Signalling Centre, near Didcot. This is one of Network Rail’s area control centres. It will take over the control of all the other signal boxes in the Thames Valley area as they become life-expired. The signals will be run by a state-of-the-art computerised system which already controls trains from Moreton, east of Didcot, to London’s Paddington station, and Reading to Westbury. In addition, the improvement work is also vital to prepare the signalling infrastructure so that it is compatible with an electrified railway.
Xact Power were challenged to provide uninterruptible power to the high tech data centre in Didcot without taking up valuable space to house the temporary additional support. Xact Power created an innovative resolution and supplied the client with a self-contained power solution that can be delivered and installed within hours. It contains all the necessary switch gear and distribution panels to deliver uninterruptible power. With our dedicated team of experienced, factory trained multi-disciplinary engineers who are specialists in UPS installation and maintenance we pre-configured and tested the contained UPS systems and rapidly deployed the unit to Network Rail for emergency power support.
This self contained, eco-friendly configuration allows you to optimise space, be hooked up to pre-configured tails with minimal impact on existing facilities. This robust, resilient container has a compact footprint and high energy density. The container is highly reliable and efficient. It saves energy and reduces operating costs. The container was designed and manufactured at our fabrication and storage facility in West Bromwich, Birmingham prior to delivery and was fully tested at the premises before being transported to Didcot for installation. After the container was ideally placed and installed, load bank tests were initiated to enhance the Performance of the UPS, Generator and entire electrical infrastructure, giving total confidence in critical power supply which is crucial.
All of Xact Powers Tests are fully documented, with all procedures ensuring full traceability of all test events and actions all carried out with adherence to all Heath and Safety regulations. This was managed and controlled by one of our specialist UPS technicians to ensure operational assurance to Network Rail. The uniquely designed solution ensured that should the UPS or panels fail, the signalling center would remain fully operational which was imperative to Network Rail.
Xact power provided full pre and after sales support to the client where operational/functional user training was given by one of our specialist engineers. This project highlights Xact Power’s design and manufacturing experience of bespoke UPS equipment which has given us a reputation for delivering solutions that are innovative and reliable.
